Prosody || And Its Elements

                             PROSODY

It is the science of studying poetry. study of speech, rhythms, versification, meter, how poetry is composed, study of these is called prosody. 

1. ACCENTUAL METER: Stress, Un-stress, high volume, high pitch, clearer, longer.

Un-stress: Low volume, low pitch, non clear, short. 

2. SYLLABIC METER: Syllable means single sound unit. If there is 'Ten' means it's Monosyllable. 

EXAMPLES: Tea, meet, --- These are monosyllabic words cause vowels are standing by together with intervention of consonant.

3. ACCENTUAL SYLLABIC METER: Means the numbers of the syllables and accents, stress, un-stress will be the same. 

TYPES OF ACCENTUAL METER

1. CONTENT WORDS: STRESS, Noun, Adjective, Adverb, verb, numbers, questions, words. These will stress on every word's syllable. 

FUNCTION WORDS: NON-STRESS, Preposition, pronoun, conjunctions, articles, linking verbs= s, es, ing, hv. Auxiliary verbs. 

1. LONG VOWEL: Means to shorten the shortened long vowels.

2. DELETION OF CONSONANTS: Delete some consonants.

RHYTHM: A combination of vocal speed, rises and falls in poetry, heavy and light stress. Patterns are called feet.

MONOMETER: '1' Foot per line

DIMETER: '2' Feet per line

TRIMETER: '3' Feet per line

TETRAMETER: '4' Feet per line

PENTAMETER: '5' Feet per line

HEXAMETER: '6' Feet per line

HEPTAMETER: '7' Feet per line

OCTAMETER: '8' Feet per line. 

METERS

1. IAMBIC: '01', 0 = NON-STRESS,    1 = STRESS

Iamb(foot type), Iambic(style), 

A man(1 foot) put on(2nd foot) his hat(3rd foot) = TRIMETER

And(o) there(1) he(o) met(1) another(o) man(1)

2. TROCHEE: '10', Stressed + Unstressed 

Trochee(foot type), Trochaic(style)

Hark(1) the(o) hour(1) of(o) ten(1) is sounding

Hearts(1) with(1) anxious(1,0) fears(1) are(o) bounding(o)

3. SPONDEE: '11', Stressed + Stressed

Spondee(ft. type), Spondaic(style)

Bark(1) Bark(1)

4. DACTYL: '100', Stressed + Unstressed + Unstressed

Dactyl(ft. type), Dactylic(style)

5. ANAPEST: '001', Unstressed + Unstressed + Stressed

 Anapest(ft. type), Anapestic(style)

6. AMPHIBRACH: '010' 

Amphibrach(ft. type), Amphibrachic(style)

7. PYRRHIC: 'OO', Unstressed + Unstressed 

Pyrrhic(ft. type), Pyrrhic(style)

4. FREE VERSE: It is called popular form. It has no meter, It doesn't need meter so, It is called free verse. 

SCANSION: It analyzes or scans the stressed or un-stressed words of poetry. Last words which rhyme is called rhyming word.

RHYMING SCHEME: Look took, Bed fed. We name the rhyming scheme by 'abcd' et cetera...
